Wilcza Góra

Wilcza Góra (367 m above sea level), also known as Werewolf, is a peak of volcanic origin, located in the Kaczawskie Foothills. Góra is only 3 km from Złotoryja.

The peak stands out in the surrounding landscape for its unique shape, which is primarily due to its volcanic origin. The peak is the remnant of a volcanic vent from which hot magma flowed. As a result, a unique concentric arrangement of basalt pillars, called the "basalt rose", was created, unique in the country.

The second factor that builds or destroys the peak is the activity of the located under Wolf Mountain quarry - Wilcza Góra Basalt Mine. The visible cliff was shaped by the exploitation of the basanite found here. In order to protect the unique natural values that occur here, in 1959 a park was established in this place Wilcza Góra reserve. The reserve covers an area of nearly 1.6 hectares. Despite attempts to protect this unique site, mining activities in the vicinity of the peak led to a landslide of the mountain top in 2019.

Wilcza Góra, in addition to the natural values unique on a national scale, is an example of disastrous mining activities that have led to drastic changes in the surrounding landscape. Protecting the area of the peak does not seem to do much, since there are underground excavations under the top of the mountain, and works on the surface are carried out only a dozen or so meters from the reserve.
