Wedding in the month with "r"? Why it has importance for the wedding date?

Superstitions related to weddings sometimes cause a bit of nervousness and anxiety, but should they influence the choice of the wedding date and what month we will plan it? This is something to consider, especially when planning a wedding in a month that is controversial. So when it comes to wedding superstitions, the most important thing is to know them all when choosing the wedding date. One of the most popular wedding superstitions says that the best solution - even the only right one - is to get married in a month with an "r". The month with the letter "r" is treated as a symbol of happiness. it is said to be the perfect month for a wedding. Getting married in such a period promises a great future for the couple, harmony in the relationship and the durability of the marriage. Where did this belief come from and is there such a thing as the worst wedding date? The origins of this custom can be traced to three different translations.

According to some, the letter "r" symbolizes "family". A month with an "r" in its name is a way to emphasize the importance of getting married as creating a new family, which will soon include a child. It was said that a wedding in a month without an "r" was an ordinary union between two people that had nothing to do with a real family. Does getting married in May bring bad luck and is May a bad month for a wedding since it is so beautiful and romantic?

People living in the Middle Ages believed that getting married in the month with "r" would bring good luck to the newlyweds. Interestingly, at that time weddings were rather not organized in the summer. This was due to the Latin nomenclature, in which the summer months (May to August) do not have the letter "r". Currently, when it is summer that is considered hot wedding season, it is almost unthinkable. So May is a bad month for a wedding and the worst date? Let's not go crazy :) Set your wedding date taking into account rational premises. Take every one into account, including Friday the 13th.

Wedding and wedding superstitions also have their genesis in numerology. According to them, the number 9 is assigned to the letter "r", which is a symbol of prosperity and eternal happiness.

Suitable month for a wedding

We therefore learn that the appropriate month for a wedding is the one with the letter "r" in its name. However, is it worth believing in wedding superstitions and changing the month of the planned wedding just because of them? Especially since many couples plan to get married quite spontaneously and the date itself is secondary to them.

The best wedding date is the one chosen by the young couple, even though many superstitions say otherwise. Wedding in the month with "r" is not the only superstition related to the date of marriage. What customs are equally popular?

Getting married in the month with "r" is not everything - other superstitions related to the date

May is considered one of the worst times to get married. Not only does this month not have the letter "r" in its name, but there is also a popular belief that getting married in May will bring bad luck to the couple. This is confirmed by the words passed down from generation to generation: "a May wedding is the grave of love" and "whoever takes a vow in May quickly regrets it." But is May really the worst month for a wedding? After all, nature is at its most beautiful this month.

November was equally bad. This month should be devoted to reflection on loved ones who have passed away. A joyful celebration of marriage is out of place. Similarly, weddings should not be held during Lent. According to some, Advent is also not the best solution. An April Fools' Day wedding can be treated as a joke.

So when is the best time to get married? Apart from the months with an "r" in the name, it is the period of Christmas, carnival, or wedding at Easter.

Wedding superstitions related to the dress of the bride and groom

Getting married in the month with "r" and other claims related to the date are just a small part of wedding superstitions. There are also a lot of them around the clothing of the newlyweds. The most popular of them relate to the bride's outfit. It is said that the future wife should wear on her wedding day:

Superstitions about this have been circulating for generations.

The groom should wear a shirt that his future wife will buy for him. In his jacket pocket he must put a banknote, which is a symbol of wealth in marriage. If during the ceremony, the hem of the wedding dress covers part of the groom's shoes, it means that the wife will keep her husband under the thumb.

Wedding day - superstitions about the wedding ceremony

We already know that it is worth getting married in the month with "r" - because this date was considered the ideal time - the bride should wear something borrowed, and the groom should not see his future wife wearing a wedding dress before the ceremony. There are also many superstitions surrounding the church ceremony.

Particular caution should be exercised by the bride - each of her slips symbolizes a skirmish in the marriage. Mistakes while taking the oath are a good omen. They are supposed to herald happiness for the couple. After the ceremony, the newly-weds are showered with rice and coins, which is supposed to ensure their abundance. Bread symbolizes wealth, and salt is supposed to drive away evil spirits. Newly baked spouses are also given two glasses - one filled with vodka and the other with water. The person who chooses a glass of vodka will rule the marriage. Young people throw glasses behind each other. The more glass there is on the earth, the happier the time of marriage will be.

Then the groom brings his wife over the threshold wedding hall. Thanks to this, it protects her from a trip that could bring misfortune to the marriage. The wedding fun begins with the first dance of the newlyweds. Mistake of steps portends disagreement in the relationship.

Perfect month – Is it worth believing in wedding superstitions?

Wedding superstitions have existed for a long time. Some people consider them funny and ridiculous, while others take them completely seriously. But does happiness in marriage really depend on the fact that we get married in the month with an "r", the bride does not trip on the way to the altar, and the groom puts money in his jacket pocket? Not completely. For a good marital life, the most important values are love, fidelity and trust, not the fact that they will wedding in April. Spouses must nurture their relationship, support each other in good and bad times, and respect each other. Shoes placed on the windowsill or a white dress do not matter here. Wedding superstitions should only be an interesting element of the wedding tradition.
