Klodzko Fortress

Kłodzko Fortress (ger. Festung Glatz) is a huge complex of defensive buildings towering over the city of Kłodzko, which dates back to the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The fortress is located on Góra Forteczna (368 m above sea level).

The hill on which the complex was founded Klodzko Fortress dates back to distant times - once, according to legend, there was probably a wooden stronghold here. It is believed that during the reign of the Piast prince Henry IV Probus, a stone stronghold was erected in this place. In the following centuries, the castle was expanded and its functions were extended. These were not only defensive functions, but also residential ones - the castle became the pride of the Kłodzko county.

Klodzko Fortress it was rebuilt into a defensive fortress after the Battle of Biała Góra in 1622, after which the residence required reconstruction. In the years 1690 - 1702, the expansion of its fortifications was carried out, replacing elements of, among others, medieval walls with bastions and curtains. The entire defensive complex was formed by the so-called a crown work, the center of which was a fortified castle. The second stage of expansion was in 1742, when the Prussian king Frederick II the Great ordered to expand the fortress with new forts (then the famous Fort on Owcza Góra was built), appointing Kłodzko one of the most important defense points of the kingdom.
