Silver Mountain Fortress

The Srebrna Góra Fortress is a complex of forts, built in the years 1765-1777 in the village of Srebrna Góra in Lower Silesia. At the time of its construction, it was the most modern building of this type in Europe. The fortress is a whole complex of fortifications surrounding the town, among which the best preserved and open to the public are Fort Donjon and Fort Ostróg-Spitzberg.

Silver Mountain Fortress is the work of the Prussian architect Ludwik Wilhelm Regler. Its purpose was to secure the territories of Silesia militarily, which in 1740 entered the borders of Prussia. The construction of the fortification complex took 12 years. In addition, it consumed a huge amount of thalers, which were collected thanks to a special tax imposed on Silesians. It was the so-called the Silver Mountain pass.

The fortress had its trial day during the siege by the Napoleonic army in June 1807. Then the fortress changed its function to a prison, until 1867. Already at the end of the 19th century, its architectural qualities were noticed, which attracted those interested in militaria, which is why the fortification was turned into a tourist and recreation facility.
