Dziurawa Skała and a picnic with art in the background

Dziurawa Skała on the Podgórzyn - Przesieka route is a 20-meter-high granite rock formation that is hard to miss because it is located at a characteristic sharp bend in the road. At its foot there flows a picturesque stream - Podgórna, next to which sits the Spirit of the Mountains carved from wood.

The Dziurawa Skała rock group is also called "the rock with a hole". It is located in the Jelenia Góra Valley at an altitude of approximately 470 m above sea level. The name Dziurawa Skała refers to the characteristic crevice (through cave), which is located right next to the peak. To emphasize the beauty of the rock formation, the rock was additionally illuminated, making it look beautiful even after dark.

What is the history of Leaky Rock?

Before World War II, Dziurawa Skała had the status of a natural monument. It was a very popular attraction that attracted tourists. It was visible on all maps of the time under the name Katzenstein. In the post-war period, the rock slowly fell into oblivion until it was finally almost completely obscured by the neighboring spruce trees.

Dziurawa Skała was re-discovered only in 2008. It took place during the first edition of the "Picnic with art at Dziurawa Skała" event. Party turned out to be a success, so much so that it became a permanent fixture in the calendar of cultural events in the Karkonosze Mountains. Since then, it has attracted a group of loyal fans every year. This is why - on the initiative of the inhabitants of Przesieka and Podgórzyn - the area at Dziurawa Skała was cleared of self-seeding trees, and a parking lot with benches and tables and a viewing point were built near the rock - an ideal place for observation.

Dziurawa Skała – an ideal place for a break in your journey

The beginnings of the Karkonosze rocks and rock formations were formed by lava solidifying in the higher parts of the earth's crust. The Karkonosze granite is therefore a product of the crystallization of hot magma.

In the Karkonosze Mountains there are over 100 larger rock formations and countless smaller rocks, the origin and form of which arouse the curiosity of not only geologists and researchers. The tallest of them reach up to 30 meters in height and are visible from a distance. The Karkonosze granite is characterized by a network of cracks that give the impression that someone cut larger rocks into smaller pieces.

Dziurawa Skała is a perfect place for a short break in your journey. You can organize a picnic there or use a convenient place to observe the area.

Beneath the rock sits the wooden Mountain Spirit who guards this place. Some people think that it may be the legendary Liczyrzepa himself - the hero of numerous Karkonosze legends that are associated with the pagan cult of the sources of the Elbe River. He is the personification of all the local forces of nature. Initially, he was portrayed as an evil spirit or demon, but today he is held in greater esteem.
