After World War II, the city, destroyed in 80%, gained importance at the time discovery of huge copper deposits in the area. Since the end of the 1950s, the entire industry has been focused on the extraction and processing of this raw material, as well as silver, also mined in large quantities. KGHM financed the city's infrastructure, new housing estates, schools, kindergartens and shops were built.
