Legnica is located on the Legnica Plain, on the border of the Sudety Foothills and the Silesian Lowlands, on the Kaczawa and Czarna Woda rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in the region. In the past it was the intersection of important communication routes (the route of the Cistercians and the trade and pilgrimage Via Regia, leading from Portugal to Ukraine). For this reason too Legnica had commercial, but also strategic and defensive functions. It received city rights in the 13th century. During this period, one of the battles that decided about the fate of Europe took place near Legnica - against the Mongols in 1241.
Since the 1950s, it has become an important industrial center, the first copper smelter in Poland was established here, serving Kombinat Górniczo-Hutniczy with its seat in nearby Lubin.
In the years 1945-1993, the largest Soviet garrison in Poland was stationed in Legnica, which also influenced the shape of the city. Legnica was even dubbed "Little Moscow", which years later was brilliantly portrayed in his film of the same title by director Waldemar Krzystek.
Being in Legnica, it is worth immersing yourself in the atmosphere of a wonderful city park or a picturesque, Art Nouveau district of Tarninów with beautiful villas.

Many monuments have been preserved in Legnicasome date back to the Middle Ages. Among the oldest are: Piast Castle with a chapel (for 750 years the seat of the local authorities, one of the first stone strongholds in these lands), the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, as well as fragments of defensive walls with two towers.

Fragments of the architecture of the Piast Castle date back to the Renaissance period several tenement houses in the Market Square, with the team of "herring stalls". The most famous is House "Under the Quail's Basket". Built in the 14th century, but rebuilt and decorated with sgraffito in the mid-16th century, it is a corner tenement house on the Market Square. It took its name from an unusual, cylindrical bay window. In addition, in Legnica we will find 5 other tenement houses decorated with this rare technique, characteristic of the Renaissance.

In Legnica you can also admire baroque monuments in the form of the Mausoleum of the Silesian Piasts, the Lubiąski Abbots' Palace and the famous, four-sided Knights' Academy, an elite school for noble youth.

They were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries New Town Hall or a Neo-Renaissance building theaterby the well-known designer of theater architecture, Carl Ferdynand Langhans the Younger.
