Szklarska Poręba leży w powiecie karkonoskim. Miasto, obok Karpacza, to najbardziej znany kurort górski w Karkonoszach. Szklarska Poręba położona jest w dolinie rzeki Kamiennej, u podnóża Szrenicy. W tym miejscu stykają dwa pasma górskie, czyli Góry Izerskie i Karkonosze.
Swą nazwę miejscowość zawdzięcza produkcji szkła – pierwsza huta tego typu rozpoczęła działalność w Szklarskiej Porębie już w XIV wieku, a może nawet wcześniej. A żeby mogła funkcjonować huta, potrzeba było mnóstwo drewna, więc rozpoczęto wyrąb na wielką skalę. Stąd drugi człon nazwy miasta.
Apart from hutników szkła tereny te upodobali sobie przybysze z Europy Zachodniej – Walończycy, poszukiwacze „skarbów”, czyli rud i minerałów. Do dziś na terenie Szklarskiej Poręby i okolic znaleźć można pozostawione przez nich wyrobiska, szyby czy głazy oznaczone tajemniczymi symbolami. Ponadto w miejscowych restauracjach spotkać możemy dania kuchni regionalnej inspirowane ich potrawami.

Od końca XIX wieku Szklarską Porębę chętnie odwiedzali i zamieszkiwali przedstawiciele świata kultury, sztuki i nauki. Obecnie Szklarska Poręba to znane miejsce sportów zimowych i letnich. Zwłaszcza że panuje tu swoisty mikroklimat, sprzyjający utrzymywaniu się pokrywy śnieżnej.
